When it comes to cybersecurity, the basics still matter. A lot.

IBM’s 2023 Cost of a Data Breach Report found that 82% of breaches involved cloud data and most of them could’ve been stopped with simple, everyday safeguards.

That’s where “cyber hygiene” comes in. Think of it as your business’s version of daily handwashing. Not flashy. Not exciting. But essential. Skip it, and you’re inviting trouble.

Here are four cyber hygiene must-haves every Milwaukee small business should put in place:

  1. Lock down your network

Keep your internet connection secure with encryption, a strong firewall, and password-protected WiFi. Hide your network name (SSID) so it’s not broadcasting for anyone nearby to see. And if you’ve got remote workers, make sure they’re connecting through a VPN.

  1. Train your team (again and again)

Most breaches start with human error. Strong passwords, MFA, and smart internet use should be non-negotiables. Also teach employees how to spot phishing emails, avoid sketchy downloads, and handle sensitive data the right way.

  1. Back up your critical data

A crash, breach, or ransomware attack shouldn’t put you out of business. Back up your documents, spreadsheets, HR and finance files, and databases. Perform backups automatically if possible. Store copies securely in the cloud or offsite so you’re never left empty-handed.

  1. Control who has access

Not everyone needs access to everything. Give employees only what they need for their role, keep admin privileges limited to trusted IT staff, and remove access for anyone who leaves the company. Fewer keys in circulation means fewer doors for hackers to open.

Security Is Worth the Effort

Yes, these steps take time. But not nearly as much time, or money, as recovering from a breach or ransomware attack that halts your operations.
